Are you looking into how to travel from Gozo to Comino?

This guide offers information about the Gozo to Comino ferry service, guided boat tours as alternatives and most importantly, helpful advice that will help you decide on transportation ahead of time.

Travelling from Gozo to Comino

So, you’ve decided you want to add a day trip from Gozo to Comino. You’re keen to swim in the famous Blue Lagoon, or snorkel in the Crystal Lagoon, and discover the beauty of the caves. Getting there from Gozo couldn’t be easier!

Like Malta, ferry services are available from Mġarr Harbour, Gozo. Additionally, several tour operators offer guided whole-day tours, half-day trips and even private ones for tourists interested in having a more organised holiday.

Here’s a detailed overview of your options:

Gozo to Comino Ferry Service

The Gozo Comino ferry service is the most economical and common option for families with children or couples staying in nearby Gozitan villages like Nadur or Qala.

During the summer, boats leave Mġarr Harbour in Gozo for the Blue Lagoon in Comino on a daily basis. With this in mind, two ferry operators are available:

  • Comino Ferries Co-Op
  • Ebsons Comino Ferries
  • Bella Comino Ferry

Regarding costs, it’s around €13-15 for a round-trip service (often including a tour of the Comino caves). Tickets can be purchased in advance from the respective websites or the kiosks set up near the departure point.

Generally speaking, both operators depart from Mġarr harbour every hour or half-hour, 8 a.m. to 5 / 6 p.m., but it’s best to check their ferry schedule or contact them directly for the latest updates. The journey from Gozo to Blue Lagoon, Comino takes approximately 15 minutes.

Important: While the Comino Ferries Co-Op provides a QR code as part of the Blue Lagoon access system (for anyone looking to set foot on land in Comino), Ebsons and Bella Comino don’t yet specify whether they do so as well. If you decide to go for either of the latter services, please check beforehand.

Tip: It’s best to arrive early at Mġarr Harbour and the Comino ferry boarding point to avoid big crowds visiting the island during peak season.

Recommended Boat Trips (Alternative)

If you’re not on a tight budget, consider booking a guided day trip from Gozo to Comino. Although there is a price difference between the ferry service and guided tours, the perks that come with the latter are worth your money.

Final Thoughts and Tips

  • Take an early ferry service. Since the Blue Lagoon is a popular attraction during the summer season, it’s always crowded with people. If you think ahead, you can get a good spot on the beach and make the most of your day before more people arrive.
  • If you’re prone to seasickness, make sure you have some seasickness pills or acupressure bands to make the ferry journey easier.
  • Make sure you’ve got a decent pair of shoes with you. It can be tricky to walk on the rocks in Comino with flip-flops.
  • Always carry lots of water, sunscreen, a hat and all the essentials you need to beat the scorching summer heat Malta is known for.
  • Although you can find fast food and drinks at the Blue Lagoon Comino from the nearby kiosks, bear in mind there are always long queues in the summer. It may also not necessarily be to your liking. I prefer preparing a Maltese ftira or a light lunch from home, so perhaps it’s easier to bring something along with you from Gozo.
