What is Buġibba like?

Buġibba is a tourist destination where many visitors choose to stay. The cluster of towns was originally home to holiday houses of Maltese locals and has recently faced a big increase of its population thanks to a large number of expats moving there.

Thousands of locals still move to the area for the hot summer months for a large variety of entertainment, and it has become a bustling area and social hub for locals and visitors alike.

Buġibba’s famous seaside promenade stretches along the coast for three kilometres and leads to Qawra Point Beach, offering beautiful sunset views over the Mediterranean Sea. During the summer months, people love to stroll down the promenade after the sun sets to enjoy the warm, breezy air.

There’s plenty to do for visitors in the area: Swimming, sunbathing, water sports and snorkelling – you can do it all in Buġibba. Even if you’re interested in scuba diving or jet skiing you can do so here.

Besides the gorgeous seaside, there are plenty of places to eat, like pizzerias and gelaterias. Enjoy the breeze and smell of the sea on an outdoor terrace or grab an ice cream to enjoy at the beach at Sotto Zero, one of Malta’s best gelaterias.

You can also opt to shop for souvenirs in one of the many gift shops near the palm tree-lined Buġibba Square.

The nightlife is abundant: pubs, sports bars, clubs and a casino can all be found within walking distance.

Buġibba is also home to the Malta National Aquarium, the Malta Classic Car Collection Museum and the restored St. Paul’s Shipwreck Church which dates back to the 14th century.

And if that’s not enough, you’ll be happy to know that Buġibba is well-connected with buses. If you are looking to explore the North of the island or even visit the islands of Gozo and Comino, Buġibba is the perfect place to be based.

As it was built in the last fifty years, Buġibba is not a typical Maltese village. It is better known for its lively nightlife and family-friendly hotels, as it has few historical and cultural sites.

But that doesn’t make the destination less popular: Tens of thousands of visitors flock to the seaside near Buġibba every year, and the lively town is especially popular among British visitors.

Another reason for tourists to stay in Buġibba is the fact that accommodation is reasonably priced, compared to for instance St. Julian’s, Sliema and Valletta. As it’s on the seaside, make sure to find accommodation with a sea view if you can stretch your budget a little – it really does provide the added value that you pay for.

Why stay in Buġibba (and why not)?

Buġibba is a popular place to stay in when travelling to Malta, and for good reasons. But there are downsides to everything, and Buġibba is no exception.

Reasons to stay here

Stay in Buġibba if you want:

  • Reasonably priced accommodation close to the sea (with a sea view if you wish!)
  • A decent hotel or resort near good restaurants and other local amenities
  • A good base to explore the rest of the island(s), including plenty of tour options around Malta, Gozo and Comino

Things to keep in mind

But keep in mind that Buġibba is:

  • Not a typical Maltese village, and has few historical and cultural attractions
  • Busy and crowded in the summer months, especially from June to August
  • Extremely short on parking spaces during the busy months, so it’s not ideal to rent a car unless your accommodation includes parking

Tips if you’re considering staying here

  • Look for accommodation near the seaside, as this is the best part of the town
  • Sign up for tours around the islands starting in Buġibba, so you save time and money on transport
  • If you’re travelling as a couple, avoid the larger hotels for a quieter holiday. There are great options on AirBnB and VRBO for apartments.

As a Dutch expat in Malta, I’m always exploring the Maltese islands. I am constantly on the lookout for the best places to go, the most delicious food to savour, and the most indulging events to experience. Whenever I’m not happily writing about my experiences, you can find me scuba diving in the Mediterranean or hiking around the islands. In the three years I’ve lived in Malta, I got to know the ins and outs of Maltese culture. My mix of Maltese and international friends is perfect for exploring local gems with the enthusiasm of a newcomer. I’m here to write about my experiences, and I’m more than happy to share my local and cultural knowledge with you!
