Malta Itinerary: How to Spend 6 Full Days

  • Picture of Christine Cassar Christine Cassar
  • Last updated on April 8, 2026

Excited about your upcoming trip to Malta but not sure how long to go, what to see and do, and how to get the most out of your well-deserved holiday?

This Malta itinerary is made for you as a source of inspiration and is full of local tips and insights to offer you a trip to remember.

In this comprehensive guide, I offer tips and tricks on maximising your time on the island by incorporating sightseeing, cultural experiences, day tours, swimming, hiking, food sampling, and other activities into your itinerary spanning 6 full days.

Let’s get started!

Guide index

Your Malta Itinerary: The Planning Stage

Malta’s compact size makes it easy to see many attractions and places of interest in a week. That being said, I always advise travellers not to overdo it and instead achieve a balanced trip with sightseeing, dining out, relaxation, etc.

This brings me to how you should plan your itinerary.

My Top Tips:

  1. Always prioritise the vast majority of must-sees during the first days of the trip rather than the final day, so you won’t miss out on anything you’d like to see if you’re too exhausted or don’t have enough time as the trip draws to an end.
  2. Pace yourself. There’s a lot to see within a relatively small area, but don’t try to cram too much into your days. Malta is a place to be “in the moment with”.
  3. A rental car gives you much more flexibility, though for a first-time visit, you can do without one. If you do decide to hire a car, avoid driving during rush hour and make sure there are either public or private parking options available to you.

Bearing in mind that there isn’t a one-size-fits-all itinerary, I created a mix of must-see places of interest, UNESCO World Heritage Sites, beach days, day trips, and alternative options to suit all kinds of travellers.

Malta Itinerary: My Recommendation

If you’re thinking of escaping your daily hustle for a week away, here’s how I recommend planning 6 full days in Malta.

Day 1: Valletta

Typical street scene in Valletta.
Typical street scene in Valletta.

There is simply no better way to kickstart your holiday than by visiting Malta’s Capital City, Valletta. Renowned as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the 2018 Capital of Culture, Valletta simply has it all.

You can visit museums and exhibitions, get more insights about Malta’s past by heading to historic attractions, get a bite to eat at a local restaurant, and shop for souvenirs and other bits and bobs to take home with you. You can even just enjoy long walks around its charming streets to admire the old buildings and unique architecture.

If you’re set on exploring a couple of museums and key places of interest, I highly recommend the following spots in your Malta itinerary:

  • St John’s Co-Cathedral
  • The National War Museum in Fort St Elmo
  • The Grand Master’s Palace in St George’s Square
  • The National Museum of Archaeology
  • Casa Rocca Piccola
  • Lower and Upper Barrakka Gardens public park
  • Strait Street

You can check out other places of interest in the Capital here: Valletta All You Need to Know About Malta’s Capital.

Itinerary Tip: If you plan on using public transport, most buses pass through and terminate at the Valletta bus station.

My Favourite Spots in Valletta

  • Strait Street
  • Upper Barrakka Gardens
  • Merchant Street
  • Saint John’s Co-Cathedral
  • Republic Street
  • St George’s Square

Sample Local Culture

  • Enjoy a walk around the narrow streets and alleys
  • Order a charcuterie board paired with a local bottle at a wine bar in Strait Street
  • Catch a theatrical performance/screening at the Teatru Manoel or Spazju Kreattiv
  • Buy pastizzi and imqaret from one of the many kiosks scattered around the city
  • If you’re visiting Malta in February, don’t miss the Carnival celebrations!
  • Visit D’Amato Records – The Oldest Record Shop in the World

Day 2: The Three Cities

A colourful facade in the Three Cities.Made up of Birgu (Vittoriosa), Bormla (Cospicua), and Isla (Senglea) — collectively known as Il-Cottonera locally — the Three Cities warrant a spot on your Malta itinerary visit, especially if this is your first trip to the island.

It is one of the most important historic sites on the island, which played a key role in the Great Siege of 1565 and suffered significant damage during the Second World War. Some places of interest include St. Lawrence’s Church, Fort St Angelo, the Gardjola Gardens, the Inquisitor’s Palace, and the Parish Church of the Immaculate Conception.

I would also recommend walking around the charming streets; You’ll find anything from colourful doors and Maltese balconies to niches and other hidden gems.

Day 3: Mdina and Rabat

MdinaA niche in the street of Mdina. – also known as the Silent City, Medina, Citta’ Notabile, and Citta’ Vecchia – is a definite must-visit spot when planning your Malta itinerary. From the moment you enter the city walls through the Mdina Gate — famously used as a backdrop during the first episodes of Game of Thrones – its timeless allure invites you to explore its rich past within its walls.

As you stroll through the winding alleyways and old city walls of this gorgeous fortified town, you will pass by several medieval buildings, including key points of interest such as St Paul’s Cathedral, Palazzo Falson, Mesquita Square, and the Mdina Belvedere.

Rabat is within walking distance of Mdina. Renowned as one of Malta’s oldest towns, it houses places of interest such as St Paul’s Church, the Wignacourt Museum, and the catacombs of St. Paul and St. Agatha.

If you’re visiting Malta during the festive season, the backstreets of Rabat are transformed into the largest Christmas market – Natalis Notabilis. You can sample local delicacies, buy artisanal souvenirs, and visit crib exhibitions and other showcases set up during the week that the market is hosted.

My Favourite Spots in Mdina & Rabat

  • Mdina Gate
  • St Paul’s Cathedral
  • Mesquita Square
  • Mdina Belvedere
  • St Paul’s Catacombs
  • St Paul’s Church

Sample Local Culture

  • Try some pastizzi from Is-Serkin, the number one spot to sample a fan-favourite local delicacy.
  • Find charming doors and traditional Maltese balconies in the backstreets of Rabat.
  • Attend the Medieval Mdina Festival, an annual event with falconry displays, live music, performances of battle scenes and traditions, as well as traditional floats.
  • Visit the Rabat Sunday market, just a stone’s throw away from St Paul’s Church

Day 4: Gozo

Traditional Maltese balconies and a niche in the alleys of Victoria, Gozo.Your Malta itinerary isn’t complete without a visit to its stunning sister island, Gozo. From stunning beaches to historic sites and major attractions to off-the-beaten-track locations, Gozo has everything you need for another memorable day out.

And on that note, here are some key places that most certainly warrant a visit:

  • The Citadel: A must-see in Victoria is undoubtedly the Citadel. You can enjoy walking around the quiet streets and alleyways or visit the museums housed within the ancient walled city for more insights about the rich history that shaped the tiny island nation.
  • Dwejra: Probably best known for being the former site of the Azure Window, Dwejra is surrounded by dramatic cliffs, beautiful diving sites like the Blue Hole, historic attractions such as the Dwejra Watchtower, Fungus Rock, and the gorgeous Inland Sea. In a word, spectacular!
  • Ta’ Pinu National Shrine: Ta’ Pinu Church is one of the most iconic landmarks in Gozo. Besides being a place of worship, it’s truly an artistic and architectural masterpiece in its own right.
  • Ramla Bay: Locally known as Ir-Ramla il-Ħamra, this is one of Gozo’s best beaches and probably the most famous one too! You can even enjoy breathtaking views of the bay from Tal-Mixta Cave.
  • Xwejni Salt Pans: Watch the sunset at the ancient Xwejni salt pans near the small town of Żebbug, Gozo. Interestingly, salt mining from the sea is a local tradition dating back to Phoenician and Roman times! The pans act as sieves into which the salt is left after it washes up on the shore. When the water evaporates, the salt is left behind and harvested.

My Favourite Spots in Gozo

  • The Citadel
  • Dwejra’s Inland Sea
  • The Xwejni Salt Pans
  • Villa Rundle Gardens in Victoria
  • Tal-Mixta Cave
  • Ramla Bay
  • Wied il-Għasri

Sample Local Culture

  • Try the famous Gozitan ftira at Maxokk
  • Experience the notorious Nadur Carnival celebrations in February

Day 5: Marsaxlokk, St Peter’s Pool & Blue Grotto

The church dedicated to Our Lady of Pompeii in the heart of Marsaxlokk village.Located on the island’s southeastern coast, Marsaxlokk is the charming fishing village best known for the Sunday market, many seafood restaurants, and luzzu boats (traditional colourful fishing boats generally painted in greens, blues, yellows, and reds coupled with a pair of eyes on the bow) floating along the harbour.

The market creates a buzz around Marsaxlokk, making it a vibrant place to visit all year round. But suppose you’re visiting in the summer. In that case, you can include a stop at St Peter’s Pool — a natural pool at the tip of Delimara Point, ideal for snorkelling enthusiasts, divers, and swimmers who don’t mind swimming in deeper waters.

Composed of a series of stunning sea caves, Blue Grotto is truly spectacular. It’s popular with locals and tourists because the reflection of the sun’s rays on the sandy seafloor illuminates the caves, making the sea appear bright blue. Not to be missed!

My Favourite Spots in/near Marsaxlokk

  • Marsaxlokk Harbour
  • St Peter’s Pool
  • Blue Grotto

Sample Local Culture

  • Visit the iconic Sunday market in Marsaxlokk.
  • Take a boat trip on a luzzu

Day 6: Temples – Ħaġar Qim, Mnajdra Temples and Għar Dalam

Malta is home to seven megalithic temples. Impressively, they are over 5,500 years old, which means they are older than the Pyramids and Stonehenge.

Ħaġar Qim features a series of megalithic buildings with the distinct Globigerina limestone. Meanwhile, the Mnajra phase consists of three buildings, constructed in globigerina and coralline limestone. Għar Dalam also warrants a visit since it’s the island’s oldest prehistoric site, featuring a myriad of archaeological excavations.

Day 6 (Alternative): Comino & Blue Lagoon

Comino Island and Cominotto

Based on my experience helping tourists plan a summer holiday to Malta, most people want to include Comino (the smallest of the Maltese Islands) on their Malta itinerary. However, it’s not for everyone because it can get very busy at the height of summer.

Renowned for its stunningly beautiful turquoise sea, the Blue Lagoon is the main attraction on the tiny island. However, did you know there are also other gems worth exploring in Comino alongside the Blue Lagoon, namely:

  • The Crystal Lagoon: Especially popular among scuba diving enthusiasts interested in getting a closer look at the local species found in Maltese waters.
  • Santa Marija Caves: If you’re an advanced scuba diver or free diver, you may also want to check out the spectacular Santa Marija Caves. This is a series of 10 caves with peculiar rock formations, caverns, grottos, and other hidden wonders waiting to be explored.
  • Secluded Spots: Santa Marija Bay is an ideal spot for tourists seeking quieter areas than the Blue Lagoon, particularly during peak season.

Tip:

  • Get to the ferry terminal early enough if you plan to use the service. It’s one of the most popular attractions and gets crowded during peak season.
  • Don’t forget to book your access ticket if you plan to set foot on shore.
  • Consider booking a day tour to beat the crowds heading to Comino and the Blue Lagoon.
  • Although there are food trucks selling sandwiches, drinks, burgers, pizzas, and other snacks, I think they are quite overpriced for what you’re getting. Consider taking a packed lunch instead.

My Favourite Spots in Comino

  • Blue Lagoon
  • Crystal Lagoon
  • Santa Marija Bay
  • Santa Marija Caves

Day 6 (Alternative): Beach Day

Whether you love sandy beaches or rocky shores, you’re spoiled for choice with the number of gorgeous beaches scattered around the Maltese Islands. Needless to say, if you love swimming and snorkelling, a beach day on your Malta itinerary is a must! Check out some of the best ones here:

  • Mellieħa Bay: Or as it is known locally, L-Għadira is a family-friendly beach with lots of water sports rentals for thrill seekers. Additionally, there are lots of kiosks and restaurants just a short walk away from the shore.
  • Golden Bay (Ir-Ramla tal-Mixquqa): A beautiful place to enjoy a picnic or takeout while watching the sunset. With good facilities and several restaurants, this beach caters for many visitors.
  • Għajn Tuffieħa Bay: A fan favourite among Maltese and visitors. There is one restaurant, Singita, where you can enjoy tasty meals with stunning views.
  • Paradise Bay: Overlooking Gozo and Comino Island, this beach is unique as it sits at the bottom of high cliffs. If you are into hiking, I suggest a hike through the area. Pass the Red Tower, enjoy the untouched nature and end your hike at Paradise Bay for a well-deserved rest.
  • Anchor Bay: Located in Mellieħa, Anchor Bay is one of the island’s most picturesque inlets. It is surrounded by the colourful huts of the popular theme park, Popeye Village, the iconic film set for Robin Williams’ movie Popeye (1980).
  • Imġiebaħ Bay: This unspoiled beach is challenging to get to, as it requires quite a hike to arrive at the beach. Since access is limited, it makes it all the more special and secluded. I recommend trekking down the cliff to be rewarded with scenic views.
Golden Bay is located on the West coast of Malta.

Getting around Malta

With Malta’s compact size, it’s easy to get around the island. Compared to bigger countries, the distance from one place to another isn’t too long — unless you’re stuck in traffic.

And on that note, here are the main modes of transport:

  1. Public Transport: Taking a bus ride is the most economical option
  2. Taxi: A comfortable and flexible option
  3. Rental Car: Best option to see the island at your own pace
  4. Ferry Services: An alternative way to travel around Malta and from Malta to Gozo/Comino
  5. Guided tours: These are always a good idea if you prefer a more organised day out. If any of the tours I listed in each section of the Malta itinerary (Day 1 – 6) piqued your interest, click on the call-to-action buttons for a full description and what’s included in the tour.

Hacks and Insider Tips

Tickets and Deals

  • Are you interested in visiting the museums inside the Cittadella in Gozo? It’s worth getting the Discover Gozo Combo Ticket. This grants access to all Heritage Malta museums: Cittadella Visitors’ Centre, Gozo Museum of Archaeology, Gran Castello Historic House, Gozo Nature Museum, and Old Prison. The combo ticket’s fee ranges between €7 and €13 (Adults, Seniors & Students, and Children).
  • If the trip is focused on sightseeing, you’re better off booking a stay at any time of year except peak season (June- early September). As someone not particularly keen on very hot weather, I think getting around sites and landmarks is easier if the weather is cooler.
  • Download Bolt and Uber to your phone to book a taxi. Both apps are available on the App Store and Google Play Store. Perhaps you won’t find taxis as expensive in Malta, compared to other countries across Europe; however, the prices increase significantly when popular events and other concerts are hosted.

Best Time to Visit Malta

With over 300 days of sun all year round, I wouldn’t say there’s a good or bad time to go to Malta. Most people decide to go between April and June, when the weather is great for sightseeing and (late May, into June) good for swimming as well.

Whenever you decide to go, there’s always something going on. However, it all boils down to what you’d like to do and your preferences. Keep in mind the following points:

  • What kind of trip would you like?
  • What kind of traveller are you?
  • Are you travelling solo or with a partner/family?
  • Would you like to visit Malta for a particular event that’s taking place?
  • Although the country enjoys mild winters, Malta experiences cold, humidity. Since most houses and hotels don’t have central heating, this may bother you if you don’t like the chillier weather.
  • If you’re not a summer person, avoid visiting Malta between the peak summer months (late June and August). Temperatures can either feel or soar up to 40 degrees!
  • Nature lovers will love Malta between late March and May

Where to Stay in Malta

You’ll find many accommodation options all over the island, but deciding where to stay depends mostly on 1) how much sightseeing you plan to do, and 2) whether you want to spend time at the beach, and if so, how much.

Generally, for beach stays, Mellieħa is the best option, although staying in Gozo with a rental car is also a good option (if sightseeing in Malta is less important to you).

For sightseeing, the best locations are:

  • Valletta (or nearby Floriana) – Lots to see in this area, and it’s easy to catch the bus to anywhere in Malta
  • The Three Cities – Not as well connected as Valletta, but easy to cross the harbour by ferry, and nice atmosphere
  • Rabat (and nearby Mdina) – A recommendation if culture is a priority, situated in a more rural part of Malta. Having a rental car is important here, however.
  • Sliema (and also nearby St. Julian’s) – Busy and more urban, across the harbour from Valletta, but well-connected in terms of buses and boat tours.

For a mix of sightseeing and beach:

  • Buġibba, Qawra, or St. Paul’s Bay (cluster of villages) – Easy bus connections for both sightseeing and sandy beaches, plus a few swimming zones in this area. Easier to find budget-friendly accommodation.

FAQs

How many days are needed in Malta?

I recommend at least 3 to 4 days, but if you can extend the trip to a week, you’ll have a few extra days for sightseeing, relaxing, dining out and everything in between.

Is one week in Malta enough?

If you can spend a week or over 7 days in Malta, you’ll have plenty of time to see more places of interest, relax at the hotel, go on day trips, etc. Rather than cramming everything you’d like to do in 3 or 4 days, a week gives you more flexibility to enjoy a more balanced trip.
