Tips for Visiting Malta in December

  • Clothes to pack: To be prepared for any situation, think layers! Pack long-sleeved T-shirts, jumpers, hoodies, a jacket, a coat (not too heavy), and possibly your swimsuit if you’re brave enough to swim in the sea or if your hotel has an indoor pool.
  • Immerse yourself in the local Christmas-time traditions by visiting Christmas markets, enjoying the Christmas decorations, and trying traditional food and sweets.
  • Book accommodation with a heating system, usually a reversible air conditioner.

Where to Stay in Malta in December?

In Malta, there are different types of accommodation to cater to every visitor’s needs. Boutique hotels are the perfect setting for an authentic stay, while luxury hotels and resorts are a great way to treat yourself and sometimes offer festive packages. Self-catering apartments are ideal for families and those seeking autonomy, while farmhouses in Gozo offer a cosy countryside retreat.

December is off-season, but prices increase during the Christmas holidays, so I advise you to book your Malta trip in advance. You might find some great deals at the beginning of the month.

Night Temperature 13°C (56°F)

Malta enjoys a Mediterranean climate, meaning it won’t be freezing or gloomy during your trip. The December weather in Malta is mild and has its share of sunny days. With daytime temperatures averaging 15°C (59°F), it’s not exactly cold. It definitely won’t be a white Christmas, as snow is unheard of in Malta. However, expect some rainy days and even hail. When it rains, it usually doesn’t drizzle all day but pours for a while before stopping.

With highs of 18°C (64°F), you might think it’s really warm and that you won’t need a coat, but heads up; you WILL need a coat when visiting Malta during this time of year, especially when out and about enjoying the Christmas festivities at night. The temperature tends to feel lower than it is because of the high humidity levels and the wind.

FAQs

Is Malta worth visiting in December?

Yes, it’s worth visiting Malta in December as it promises a sunny and festive escape right at the start of winter. Although still quite warm, the weather is not ideal for boat trips and long days at the beach. However, outdoor enthusiasts will rejoice, as it’s perfect for exploring historical sites, outdoor adventures, and enjoying Malta’s charming towns at their own pace with fewer tourists.

Is Malta warm in December?

Malta is rather warm in December. With temperatures ranging between 11°C (52°F) and 18°C (64°F), it’s not as cold as in Northern European countries. However, if you visit Malta in December, don’t be fooled by the numbers—high humidity and wind can make it feel colder than it actually is.

Can you swim in Malta in December?

It’s too cold for most to swim in Malta in December. The sea temperature may not seem too low, especially if you’re used to swimming in cold water, but the wind and humidity create harsh conditions for an enjoyable swim. That said, I have seen a few people swimming in Malta in winter. If you’re up for it, just keep in mind that there are no lifeguards on the beaches, and the rough sea with strong undercurrents can make it dangerous.

I’m a French expat who arrived in Malta in 2017 and immediately fell in love with it. Ever since I have been spending my free time exploring every nook and cranny of the Maltese Islands and now know it inside out. Its historical cities, colourful streets, turquoise waters and laid-back lifestyle no longer hold any secrets from me! I’m always on the lookout for new things to do, secret corners to explore, events to attend and local specialities to taste. I also enjoy taking pictures of this highly photogenic country I’m proud to call my second home. I’m happy to pick up my pen (or better said, my keyboard) to share my experience and my best tips here with you.
