Malta Jazz Festival
Held between the 18 and the 20th of July, 2013
The Malta Jazz Festival has a special place in Malta’s events diary having, since its inception 22 years, ago attracted true, international greats of the jazz scene to Malta. Past performers include Joe Zawinul, Chick Corea, Mike Stern, John Scofield, Diana Krall, Brecker Brothers, Michel Petrucciani, Al di Meola, Tuck & Patti, Herbie Hancock, Joao Bosco, Yellowjackets, Michel Camilo and Wayne Shorter, and the Brad Mehldau Trio.
In staging the Malta Jazz Festival, MCCA aims at making Malta part of the prestigious world circuit of jazz, and introducing local audiences to a musical genre they would otherwise have little exposure to on the Islands. The Malta International Jazz Festival is known as a hub for the exchange of musical experience; an encounter between musicians of international fame and gifted local artists.
The festival has over the years created an impact on the local cultural scene. The 2009 edition, which saw the event return to its pure jazz roots and original location at historic Ta’ Liesse wharf, Grand Harbour, was one of the most successful. The magnificent setting alone makes Malta Jazz a uniquely memorable event for audience and musicians alike.
The Artistic Director is Sandro Zerafa, a Paris-based Maltese jazz musician, who took over in 2009 from the event’s originator and fellow musician Charles ‘City’ Gatt, who set up the first festival in 1990.
