Notte Bianca 2013

Over 1,000 participants; over 100 events; a broad range of cultural events from street and performing arts to visual arts and new media, from live music to literature, food and fairs... This year’s Notte Bianca promises to retain some of the features which make it so well-loved while introducing a fresh vision and exciting new concepts.

To be held on Saturday 5 October, this year’s Notte Bianca brings a fresh exuberant approach which celebrates randomness, possibility, the imagination. Attracting over 60,000 people to the capital each year, the largest cultural event in Valletta has re-invented itself into a rich kaleidoscopic fantasy.

For the first time this year, Notte Bianca will have an official opening, complete with coloured smoke and In Guardia troops firing cannons from all around Valletta. This will kickstart the festival at 6pm. A closing breakfast at 2am at the Casino Maltese will bring the night to an end.

Meanwhile, Valletta will be transformed into a city mapped out as a fairytale fantasy. Entrance will be through a designated portal at City Gate. Towards the end of the night, people will leave the city through the Central Bank annex.

Novelty touches are everywhere: from curated music stages, which require bands to play mainly original music and group them according to genre - to the re-invention of a number of locations. This year, too, for the first time, the programme is broadly split into two: the main programme, which includes festival commissions and projects – and Atmosfera, a programme of ancillary events inspired by the energy running through the capital on the night.

Perhaps another first is that this year’s festival also pays tribute to the notion of legacy: an elevated stage will be built in St Lucy Street for Misraħ il-Mużika, with a programme of classical, opera and brass band music playing live throughout the night in various locations.

“I invite you to Valletta’s largest cultural event, the night when Valletta can afford to dance and play,” says artistic director Sean Buhagiar. “This year, we have triggered a revolution of new projects, collaborated with different generations of artists, craftsmen, entertainers and cultural practitioners. Enjoy the fairytale, discover the fun, and soak in the atmosphere. Lights, camera, magic!”

Parliamentary secretary Jose’ Herrera said that Notte Bianca is an example of culture for everybody, from pop to higher culture, with a special emphasis on literature, dance and music. A feast of colour, tradition and spectacle, this year’s edition of Notte Bianca promises to be much bigger than ever before. With the participation of over 1,000 artists in a 100 different activities, this year’s edition of Notte Bianca aimed to be inclusive, said Dr Herrera. “One of the first decisions I took at the beginning of my appointment was to extend the deadline for applications to ensure the broadest possible range of artists. That is what we did and I am happy to say that all this talent is now included under one umbrella, that of Notte Bianca,” said Dr Herrera. He said that even Gozitans are being given the chance to attend Notte Bianca as a special ferry service from Mgarr to Valletta is being organised. He said that his ministry is not only supporting the programme of activities but is also investing in the mobile app project. “An innovative project which takes Notte Bianca to a new and more technological dimension reflecting contemporary times. With new ideas and a fresh vision, we are giving a stamp to this feast which attracts 60,000 people to the capital city Valletta,” said Dr Herrera.

“All this is happening in the city of Valletta which, in 2018 will officially become the European Capital of Culture. Between now and then we have the duty to draft a vision. Notte Bianca is a living example of culture for everybody,” concluded Dr Herrera.

Aktar minn 1,000 parteċipant; ‘il fuq minn 100 attivita’, firxa wiesgħa ta’ attivitajiet kulturali li tinkludi arti performattiva u viżwali, mużika u letteratura, ikel u fieri... din is-sena Notte Bianca tidher li ser iżżomm uħud minn dawk il-fatturi li jagħmluha tant popolari filwaqt li tintroduċi viżjoni ġdida u kunċetti eċitanti.

Din is-sena Notte Bianca, li ser issir nhar is-Sibt 5 ta’ Ottubru, ser tieħu bixra daqsxejn differenti u ser tiċċelebra l-fantasija, il-possibilitajiet tal-belt kapitali. Dan il-lejl, li jiġbed mas-60,000 persuna fil-kapitali kull sena, huwa l-akbar avveniment kulturali fil-kapitali.

Għall-ewwel darba din is-sena, Notte Bianca ser ikollha ftuħ uffiċjali fis-6pm, b’duħħan ikkulurit u truppi tal-In Guardia jisparaw il-kanuni madwar il-Belt. L-aħħar avveniment fil-Każin Malti ser jagħlaq dan il-lejl ta’ kultura u divertiment għall-ħabta tas-2am.

Fil-frattemp, il-belt Valletta ser tinbidel f’belt ta’ fantasija. Id-dħul ser isir minn bieb apposta ħdejn Bieb il-Belt. Lejn tmiem il-lejl, il-pubbliku ser joħroġ mill-Belt mill-annex tal-Bank Ċentrali.

Hemm sens ta’ tiġdid fil-programm. Fil-mużika, ngħidu aħna, il-gruppi se jdoqqu l-aktar mużika oriġinali u se jiġu miġburin skond il-ġeneru; ħafna mill-postijiet ukoll ġew interpretati mill-ġdid. Għall-ewwel darba din is-sena, il-programm ġie maqsum fi tnejn: il-programm prinċipali bil-kummissjonijiet u proġetti tal-festival – u Atmosfera, programm ta’ attivitajiet li ġew ispirati mill-enerġija ta’ dan il-lejl.

Forsi wkoll għall-ewwel darba, dan il-festival ipoġġi enfasi fuq is-sens ta’ legat għall-belt Valletta. Palk elevat ser jinbena fi Strada Santa Luċija għall-Misraħ il-Mużika, programm ta’  mużika klassika, opera u baned li se jindaqq lajv matul il-lejl kollu f’numru ta’ postijiet.

“Nistednukom għall-akbar avveniment kulturali ġewwa l-belt Valletta, fil-lejl meta l-belt Valletta tista’ tiżfen u tilgħab,” igħid id-direttur artistiku Sean Buhagiar. “Din is-sena ħloqna rivoluzzjoni ta’ proġetti ġodda, kkollaborajna ma ġenerazzjonijiet differenti ta’ artisti, nies tas-snajja, nies fl-ispettaklu u nies mill-kultura. Idħlu fil-fantasija, ħudu gost u gawdu l-atmosfera.”

Is-Segretarju Parlamentari Jose’ Herrera qal li Notte Bianca huwa eżempju ta’ kultura li tmur għand kulħadd. Minn kultura tat-tip pop għal kultura ogħla, b’enfasi speċjali fuq il-letteratura, żfin u mużika. B’festa ta’ l-ilwien, tradizzjonijiet u spettaklu, l-edizzjoni ta’ Notte Bianca ta’ din is-sena hija ħafna akbar minn qatt qabel. B’parteċipazzjoni t’aktar minn elf artist f’mitt attivita’ differenti, fl-edizzjoni ta’ Notte Bianca ta’ din is-sena ħsibna li nkunu inklussivi, qal Dr Herrera. “Waħda mill-ewwel deċiżjonijiet li ħadt fil-bidu tal-kariga tiegħi kienet li nestendi t-terminu tal-applikazzjonijiet ħalli b’hekk ninkludu l-akbar fierxa wiesgħa t’artisti possibli. Hekk għamilna u bi pjaċir ngħid li llum hawn dan it-talent kollu miġbur taħt kappa waħda: il-kappa Notte Bianca,” qal Dr Herrera. Huwa qal li anke l-Għawdxin qed jingħataw iċ-ċans li jattendu għal Notte Bianca u dan għaliex din is-sena nibtet l-idea li jiġi organizzat servizz tal-vapur mill-Imġarr sal-Belt Valletta. Qal ukoll li l-ministeru immexxi minnu mhux biss qed jissaportja l-programm t’attivitajiet iżda daħal biex jinvesti fil-proġett tal-mobile app. “Proġett innovattiv li qed jieħu lil Notte Bianca f’dimensjoni ġdida u aktar teknoloġika li tirrifletti ż-żminijiet tal-lum. B’viżjoni ġdida u ideat ġodda, qed nagħtu timbru ġdid ta’ din il-festa li tiġbor fi ħdana mas-60,000 persuna li lkoll bi ħġarhom jattendu l-Belt Valletta,” qal Dr Herrera.

“Dan kollu qed jiġri fil-Belt Valletta, l-belt li fl-2018 ser tkun uffiċjalment l-Kapitali tal-Ewropa għall-Kultura. Bejn illum u dakinhar għandna d-dmir li infasslu viżjoni. Notte Bianca hija eżempju ħaj ta’ fejn il-kultura tmur għand kulħadd”, temm igħid Dr Herrera.
